Cowboy Store

[C]I’m dancing in the the honky-tonk looking for a little fun
[G]the place was packed full of cowboys leaning on the bar
[C]wearing fancy boots and western shirts and they look like
[D]rodeo stars – [G]in the [D]cowboy [G]store

I’m browsing through cowboys to find one I like
don’t know what I’m looking for, but I will know when I see him
my head is swinging back and forth when the bartender asked
[D]Can I help you? [G]No, I’m [D]just [G]looking

[chorus]
[D]Shopping for a cowboy
in the bar like it’s a store
[C]plenty of boys to pick from
[G]yeah, I know I can score
but [D]will he write me love notes
and text the next day
because [C]that is what I’m shopping for
[G]in the [D]cowboy [G]store

I found the lucky cowboy that I want to try on
we left the honky-tonk and I took him home
that cowboy fits in the night tonight, but
[D]on the next day – [G]will he [D]fit the [G]same?

No. no love note, did not get a call
until the next week he only wanted a fitting
when I feel ignored, I do what I’ve done before
[D]make an exchange – [G]in the [D]cowboy [G]store

[chorus]

song history – 1st time trying longer storytelling

12/19/24

I’m dancing my way over to the dance floor because that’s what I came for. I don’t need no seat at the bar, stuck talking to only one rodeo clown, I want to dance with anyone who is brave enough to get their ass off a bar stool and come have a little bit of fun. But only for 1 night of just dancing, don’t go falling in love Mr. romantic, I’m here to break a few hearts and go home alone.

So that feels like it’s turning into a story that we’ve heard a million times already, so what is the extra spin or angle on it? We started “cowboy store”, so let’s make her go shopping for a cowboy adding verbiage leaning towards shopping, comparative shopping, price evaluation, on sale, discount, a steal, carry home, trying on, try on for size, RETURN, EXCHANGE

Change the “only for 1 night” to ‘taking home forever’ because that’s what you intend to do with clothes when shopping (unless you intend to return the item?) could have her shopping and returning/exchanging every cowboy to the bar each weekend because she tried him on for size and he just doesn’t fit. Conclusion leads to finding 1 cowboy the right size that she does not return?

substitute every clothing reference to just ‘cowboy’ for now. I’m just browsing. I get so excited to get a new cowboy from the store, I run it home and try it on right away to see how it looks in front of my full length mirror, and what shade of color is it under my warm bedroom lights? You know that lighting in the dressing room when you try on cowboys is a florescent light that is very harsh and unnatural. Why is it that the cowboy seems to fit in the store, but after wearing it for more than an hour it starts to become less fitted. Only after an hour do I start to actually notice that the seam is a little crooked here or that the hemline is just too short. Why do I kid myself in the dressing room that it looks good? why does it look good for the first 5 minutes, and then the appeal starts to fade? it’s like when you have on beer goggles, your viewing it differently. but it’s not beer goggles, it’s the ‘I want it to work’ goggles. The worst part is that I think it’s a forever cowboy so I rip off the store tags and throw them away, and by the next weekend I know that it’s not going to work out. Now I can’t return it without tags, so I try to exchange the cowboy. (unless he’s too damaged to return, then I’m stuck with him? nope, not this song) I just keep trading up cowboys every weekend. Sometimes I’m looking for the tags through the trash, where are those damn things? I’m desperate to get rid of this one(?) The cowboy starts out well fitting in the booty, and I can’t see anyting else but the booty, but by Monday I see the length is too short and I didn’t see the length too short until I sit down to go to work when I wear them to work Monday morning. I keep bringing home new cowboys because I know I can return them to the cowboy store if they don’t work out.

[D]My local pub is like a cowboy store
[A]all the men in boots are leaning on the bar
[E]on display – like rodeo [A]stars

beers in their hands are paused at their lips
while they’re looking at me and I’m looking at them
cowboy hats – are turning around

I’m shopping for a cowboy to try on for size
take him home and try him on for the night
does he write me love notes and call the next day
‘cuz if I feel ignored I’m going back… to the
cowboy store

cool, what does it mean for a cowboy to have the right fit? -> arms around tight, just the right height, his chin is at my forehead, I bend my neck to look up to kiss him, my arms stretch to cradle his neck, my hands cradle the back of his neck. All physical, what about mental? compliments me, notices my haircut, leaves me love notes, calls me, picks up after 1 ring,

I’m shopping for a cowboy that that has the right fit<– title? shopping for a cowboy / store

that’s why I trade up cowboys every weekend
and if he don’t work out, I’m going to exchange
for another one and return him at the
cowboy store – filing a complaint
best way, them stay, sex play, date, unless they
reaching up to kiss him while his arms fall down on mine
I’m looking for and ready to try on
who fits real good on me
looks good in the store until I get him home

Shopping for a cowboy that I won’t return
that I can take home and see how he fits
shopping for a cowboy that I won’t take back
to exchange for somebody else
browsing, in the market, looking for something, picking out my cowboy, seeking, hunting, trying to find
just looking – for one in my size
browsing past each one and sizing him up and down

[D]My local pub is like a cowboy store
[A]all the men in boots are leaning on the bar
[E]on display – like rodeo [A]stars
(add line?)

beers in their hands are paused at their lips

I’m shopping for a cowboy to try on for size
take him home and try him on for the night
does he write me love notes and call the next day

I feel a story in there and I like the direction, time for my first song map. I think the 1st line currently says too much actually. I’ve revealed the entire gist of the song in 1 line, when maybe we say it without actually saying IT? also, verse 2 is not needed, describing how they are looking at her is irrelevant to the shopping story, unless – we used the twist end “whos shopping who?”, but lets forget that because it might be too much subject matter for this theme. so needing a song map:

verse 1 how the bar feels like a store (full of cowboys) less about bar, more about what I’m shopping for in a boyfriend who is a cowboy
verse 2 browsing, see a cowboy I like
chorus I’m shopping for a cowboy. what am I looking for? (love notes, etc)
verse 3 took him home and now I’m trying him out
verse 4 oops looks like it might not be working out too well. exchange the cowboy, I’ve done plenty before, at the cowboy store
chorus

My local pub is like a cowboy store
all the men in boots are leaning on the bar

[chorus]I’m shopping for a cowboy to try on for size
does he write me love notes and call the next day

So it’s Friday night and I decide to head out to the bar. When I walk in there are poker machines with flashing lights on the left and a huge wooden bar along the wall on the right. all the barstools are full of well dressed men leaning on the bar with boots (and hats?)… straight ahead is the dance floor where all the women are dancing together. Behind them is a DJ booth surrounded by plexiglass. He’s playing favorite country dance songs. (how does it look like a store?) The women could have their pick of any one of the men? The men are lined up at the bar and they have on boots and hats, and well threaded cotton western shirts. Some are embroidered western scenes but some are gingham. 1 cowboy has on a silk shirt. All have on denim, but in differing colors of blue or black. No other color. Some have moustaches. None of them have man buns. Drinks range from beer bottles or cans to the whiskey glass rocks glass or old fashioned glass or lowball. spirits are neat. No mixers? They like on the rocks. also shots and shot glasses. The bartender is like the salesperson in a store, can I help you? or What can I get ya? How to incorporate I’m just looking? Let me know if I can get you anything? I didn’t come here to drink anyway because I came here to shop for a cowboy.
walked into my local bar -> but WHY?

rodeo stars
playing guitar
cheating at cards
feeling his charm
feeling his arms
touching his arms
heard the alarm

scootin’ to a honky-tonk to have a look inside
blahblah is what I found that’s the first exit, move on
finding cowboys in all shapes and sizes leaning on the bar
wearing hats and western shirts and on display like
wearing denim shades of blue and drinking beers from cans and

all lined up one right after another and on display like a
cowboy store
looking like rodeo stars

I’m browsing down the cowboy rack to find me one I like
I stop and order me a drink to see if he will buy
tells me all about himself and that he plays guitar feels forced
offers me his seat so I sit down at the bar
‘where ya from’, ‘whatcha do’, if we think it’s going well
I begin touching his arm

he’s the same cowboy in my bedroom morning light
wearing denim shades of blue and drinking from cans nice, but more sparkly
store, for, bore, core, adore, door, more, pour, roar, soar, tor, wore
sure,

‘cuz if I feel ignored I’m going back… to the
cowboy store <– save for verse 5
take him home and try him on for the night
<– save for verse 3

Cowboy Store

I two-stepped into a honky-tonk to have a look around
inside is full of cowboys leaning on the bar
wearing fancy boots and western shirts and they look just like
rodeo stars – at the cowboy store

I’m squeezing towards the bar and order a drink this doesn’t advance story
I’m browsing through the cowboys to find one I like

‘where ya from’, ‘what do ya do’, and ‘what is your name?’
making small talk – see if he’s the one

[chorus]
I’m shopping for a cowboy
in the bar like it’s a store
plenty to pick from
knowing I can score
but will he write me love notes
and call the next day
that is what I look for
at the cowboy store

I found the lucky one that I want to try on
we left that honky-tonk and I took him home
that cowboy is fitting in my life tonight
the next few days – will he fit the same?

There was no love note and I did not hear from him
until the next week when he wanted just a fitting
when I feel ignored I do what I’ve done before
make an exchange – at the cowboy store

[chorus]

12/21/24

still editing, how do I say these things in a more interesting way?

I two-stepped into a honky-tonk to have a look around
inside is full of cowboys leaning on the bar
wearing fancy boots and western shirts and they look just like
rodeo stars – in the cowboy store

I’m browsing through the cowboys to find one I like
missing line
‘where ya from’, ‘what do ya do’, and making small talk
making small talk – see if he’s the one <-incomplete sentence/thought

[chorus]
I’m shopping for a cowboy
in the bar like it’s a store
plenty to pick from
I know I can score
but will he write me love notes
and text the next day, because
this is what I’m shopping for
in the cowboy store

I found the lucky cowboy that I want to try on
we left the honky-tonk that night and I took him home
that cowboy is fitting into my life tonight
the next few days – will he fit the same?

There was no love note and I did not hear from him
until the next week when he just wanted a fitting
when I feel ignored I do what I’ve done before
make an exchange – in the cowboy store

[chorus]

Cowboy Store

I’m dancing in the the honky-tonk looking for a little fun
the place was packed full of cowboys leaning on the bar
wearing fancy boots and western shirts and they look just like
[D]rodeo [C]stars – [G]in the [D]cowboy [G]store

I’m browsing through the cowboys to find me one I like
I don’t know what I’m looking for, but I’ll know when I see him
my head is swinging back and forth when the bartender asked me
Can I help you? No, I’m just looking

[chorus]
[D]Shopping for a cowboy
in the bar like it’s a store
[C]plenty of boys to pick from
[G]yeah, I [C]know I can [G]score
but [D]will he write me love notes
and text me the next day
because [C]that is what I’m shopping for
[G]in the [D]cowboy [G]store

I found the lucky cowboy that I want to try on
we left the honky-tonk that night and I took him home
that cowboy is fitting into my life tonight
the next few days – will he fit the same? <– still a little awkward

I did not find a love note, I didn’t get a call
until the next week when he just wanted a fitting
when I feel ignored I do what I’ve done before, I will
make an exchange – in the cowboy store

Okay, story is cohesive, but the chorus is STILL the same rhythm bounce as always and the song is never broken up or feels like sections. There’s nothing really to sing along to. Rewrite the chorus, I don’t really want to but lets prove a point and get this broken up a little then move on to write a better song. This one is to story telling like with nothing special to make someone else want to sing along.

Cowboy shopping
at the cowboy store
to write me love notes
that’s what I’m shopping for
doesn’t repeat enough, no hook.

[chorus]
Shopping, shopping
for a boyfriend to
write me write me
deep love notes

cowboy boyfriend
it’s you I’m looking for
I shop
the cowboy store

Worked out a chorus, so now the first verse is not advancing the story, make more about looking for a boyfriend

giving up shopping because everywhere I turn, ‘shopping for’… sounds like I am performing a shopping errand for the cowboy/somebody else.

I browse the saloon where they’re wearing fancy boots
and leaning on the bar looking like rodeo stars

Dancing at my honky-tonk trying to see my future
among fancy boots and western shirts leaning on the bar

my next boyfriend looks like a rodeo star

[chorus]
Shopping, shopping
for a cowboy to
write me write me
deep love notes

cowboy boyfriend
I’m looking for

I found the lucky cowboy that I want to try on
we left the honky-tonk and I took him home
that cowboy fits in the night time
on the next day – will he fit the same?

No love note, did not get a call
until the following week he only wanted a fitting
when I feel ignored, I do what I’ve done before
make an exchange – in the cowboy store

[chorus]

[chorus]
Shopping, shopping
for a cowboy to
write me write me
deep love notes

cowboy boyfriend
I’m looking for
I shop
the cowboy store
