Song History
Joking Comments from open mic were “are you saying ‘Bucking’? Truth in jest! These lyrics might be too hard to pronounce?
Working title was You Dance Like A Hillbilly.
I was at Cajun Blues with my boots on and they really scoot.
I’m dancing away, really feeling good, really feeling the music, having a great day. Here comes this complete stranger walking towards me. (next song:) They always come towards me when I’m having a good time, like I’m a good time magnet. Draw all the men out the woodwork, here they come to hit on me. Can you please just leave me alone. I’ve heard it all, they want to tell me how pretty I am.
I was dancing in front of the band out in the parking lot and Pete Midnight came up to me to tell me something. I leaned in to hear something really important that he was going to say, and he said you dance like a hillbilly.
10/17/23
I got new boots and I wanted to scoot, so I two-stepped towards the band
I’m dancing away when out of the crowd, steps a very handsome man
He’s coming at me with a spark in his eye, the band continued play
So I leaned in to hear his compliments, and this is what he had to say:
“You’ dancing like a hillbilly”, then he walked away
Left me standing there, all by myself, with my ego in disarray
The crowd con-tinued to dance away, but I stood there in shock
Should I keep on dancin’ by myself, or should I turn and walk?
Dazed and confused, I gathered my wits and I gave it some more thought
but before I knew it, the boots took over and I’m still doing the hill-billy stomp!
Hill-billy!
Hill-billy!
These boots just won’t stop.
Hill-billy!
Hill-billy!
These boots do the hillbilly stomp.
I don’t care what you play, jazz funk blues or rock
these boots got a mind of their own, and gonna do the hillbilly stomp!
The crowd is starting to notice me, some people are starting to stare
(scared, prepare, prayer, dare, compare, share, pair, care, repair, )
(swamp, prompt, drop, stop, top, pop, nonstop, )
10/19/23
- nashville would say: get to chorus faster
- nashville would say: don’t water down your hook
- keep song anchored around boots are in control
- might have lost the funny twist tho, when you lose the angle of male courtship?
- introduce reoccurring theme of boots taking over?
I got new boots and I wanted to scoot, I two-stepped myself towards the band
a suitor approached to give me compliments, and this is what he had to say:
“You’ dancing like a hillbilly”, [stop] and then he walked away
Left me standing there, all by myself, with my ego in disarray
Dazed and confused, what do I do? I gave it some more thought
but before I knew it, the boots took over and I’m still doing the hillbilly stomp!
The boots took over, and I’m still dancin’
these boots they do not stop;
Get outta my way, they gotta mind of their own
I can’t stop the hillbilly stomp.
I shuffled away
The crowd is starting to notice me, some people stop and stare
I looked at my boots and said don’t you dare
(scared, prepare, prayer, dare, compare, share, pair, care, repair, )
(swamp, prompt, drop, stop, top, pop, nonstop, )
10/24/23 v1
- I know it’s not sophisticated, but at least it has a memorable hook
- I don’t want the song title to give away the twist; call it These Boots?
I got these boots and I wanted to scoot, so I two-stepped towards the band
I’m dancing away when out of the crowd, steps a very handsome man
He’s coming at me with a spark in his eye, the band continued play
So I leaned in to hear his compliments, and this is what he had to say:
“You’ dancing like a hillbilly”, [stop] then he walked away
Left me standing alone in the crowd, with my ego in disarray
Dazed and confused, what do I do? I gave it some more thought
before I find closure, these boots took over and I’m still doing the hillbilly stomp!
[chorus]
Hillbilly, Hillbilly
these boots, they just won’t stop;
Hillbilly, Hillbilly
these boots do the hillbilly stomp
The crowd rushes around me, start to surround me, a portion of the people stare
I get scared and say a prayer, and tell these boots “don’t you dare!”
But they keep on kicking, while the pickers picking, rollicking with fanfare
If these boots misbehave I swear, I swear, I swear I’m gonna get a new pair!
[chorus]
I shuffled away from the crowd, and think about going home
but it’s hard to leave, because now I believe these boots got a mind of their own
I’m forcing these boots out the back door, I’m dead tired and ready to drop
I’m heading to my Buick, still hear the music, and I’m still doing the hillbilly stomp!
[Chorus]
I’m heading to the car but the music isn’t far, so I’m still doing the hillbilly stomp!
11/2/23
Boots became the subject matter. Not only did they take over the dancing in the song, they have now taken over the song completely. The narrative will now change from boy meets girl with insult, to now the boots have a mind of their own. Still searching for a more sophisticated hook than yelling Hillbilly?
But is this the first time I learn about the boots taking over, or do I already know this fact? If I already knew this, then why would I take the boots out again knowing that they would embarrass me?
I’m feeling pretty good making my way to the dance floor like I always do. My new boots make it easy to dance because they have that slick surface for boot scootin. So it’s easy to slide around and chunk the heel into the floor dig in and grip it and twirl around. I think I’m dancing just fine and
I got new boots and I wanted to scoot, so I two-stepped towards the band
A stranger comes towards me and informs me, razzing me on my dance
He said You dance like a hillbilly
first hand, left hand, demand, understand, misunderstand, jammed, command, scanned, unplanned, expand
loose, juice, groups, seduce, whoops
A stranger comes towards me and informs me, you dance like a hillbilly
I dance just fine with a little wine, I gave it some more thought
before I find closure, the boots took over and I’m dancing like a hillbilly
humility, warned me, normally, wronged me,
music, public, to kick, panic, those lips, so rich, therapeutic, thick, lick, hick
11/16/23
Wearing new boots wanting to scoot, two-stepping towards the band
A stranger comes towards me and informs me You dance like a hillbilly
Dazed and confused, what do I do? I gave it some more thought
before I find closure the boots took over, I’m still doin the hillbilly stomp (I can’t stop)
[chorus]
Bad boots! Bucking like a Bronco
Bad boots! Bucking like a Bronco
Bad boots! Bucking like a Bronco
Not behaving like they ought to!
A crowd piles up, a portion of the people point & stare
But boots keep kicking, while the pickers picking, rollicking with fanfare
I get scared and say a prayer, and tell these boots “don’t you dare!”
If these boots misbehave I swear, I swear, I swear I’m gonna get a new pair!
[chorus]
I shuffled away from the crowd, and think about going home
it’s hard to leave, because I believe these boots got a mind of their own
I’m forcing these boots out the back door, dead tired and ready to drop
heading to my Buick, still hear the music, and still doing the hillbilly stomp (in the parking lot)
[chorus]

Home
Okay, but what does a bucking bronco got to do with it? Rework verses to make horse references comparing to dancing?
pony filly stallion colt mare brood
Bad boots, blame it on the booze
bruise
bucking, to and fro, back and forth, thrown, with nothing to hang on to, not even a horn I got no saddle I’m riding free bouncing jostling jarring whiplash afraid to fall arms wailing arms flying swinging in the air with nothing to hold on to hair tussled grasping the air butt is bouncing boobs bouncing skirt flying up out of control sliding like a jostling carnival ride no control twisting turning about face heels a kicking heels digging in spinning flying dropping landing breaking bones snapping joints cracking joints dress on my face going places I didn’t expect going places I shouldn’t busting a move making moves, pulled a muscle, throw a hip out, disjointed, rag doll,
snore neigh squeal grunt groan snore bray
palomino chestnut roan bay buckskin dun, brown, pinto, sabino, brown, red

11/18/23
Cinching up my saddle and trotting into town
I heard my jam and sprinted from the can
These new boots are scooting towards the bandMy mane is gently swaying to the sound, until
next thing I know my hat is dislodgednext thing I know my feet got charged
started herking and a jerking for reasons unknownbecause the boots took over and I’m dancing too hard
the boots took over they got a mind of their own
boot scoot myself into a graveyard
respond, dislodged, dodged, charged, sparred, star, bobbed, large, far, guard, benard brevard, apart, awkward, disown, outshown, bones
I meant to juke but just then I jived
bone, cone, done, phone, hone, clone, alone, roam, tone, won’t, unknown, thrown, blown
11/19/23
These new boots scoot towards the band
I discover I lost my lady-like cover
bad boots took over with a mind of their own
Dancing like a pony that’s gonna throw me
I got new boots and I took them home
but the boots took on a mind of their own
I am dancing down at the watering hole
like a wild pony, out of control
[chorus]
Bad boots! Bucking like a Bronco
Bad boots! Bucking like a Bronco
Bad boots! Bucking like a Bronco
Not behaving like they ought to!
My only boots, got nothing else to wear
the boots keep kicking with fanfare
I declare, “bad boots! don’t you dare!”
Better Behave or I’ll get a new pair!
dancing, ranching, branching, enhancing, panting, standing, understanding, fancy,
blown, home, roan, know, blow, dough, foe, go, hoe, low, no,
pony, know me, homy, show me, THROW ME
11/20/23 Bad Boots
I put boots on before I left home
Boots took on a mind of their own
Dancing down at the watering hole
Like a wild pony, out of control
Quit horsing around, I said with despair
Boots kept bucking, they don’t care
Bad boots! don’t you dare!
You better behave or I’ll get a new pair!
[chorus]
Bad boots! Bucking like a Bronco
Bad boots! Bucking like a Bronco
Bad boots! Bucking like a Bronco
Not behaving like they ought to!
My arms flailing, dress displaced
Bra popping, my boobs hit my face
Bouncing around and hitting my behind
Riding bad boots like a carnival ride
[chorus]
I turn to walk back to the farm
boots start racing like they see the barn
things turned ugly when they rared
I should have found other shoes to wear
fair, wear, where, mare, share, hair, pair, rear, rare
like a colt
back home bolt
We run back home like it’s the barn
Alarm, harm, farm,
Arms in the air, dress on my face
Bra is popping, boobs displaced
Bouncing around, hitting my behind
Riding the boots like a carnival ride
boots are working me like a puppet
behind, wild, smiled,
snap, crack, fracture, click, POP, crackle, whack, click
puppet, rag doll
bucket, rough it, the butt,
mistake, displaced
12/1/23 Bad Boots
The problem was that the whole song is based on the boots taking on a mind of their own, but that is stuffed all into line #2, which is easy for the listener to miss. At least line 1 & 4 are more memorable. Rework. Here, the whole song is summed up in the first 2 lines. Add chorus to beginning to add a 3rd chorus.
Replace 2 lines about bra with optional men’s wear wardrobe malfunctions.
[chorus]
Bad boots! Bucking like a Bronco
Bad boots! Bucking like a Bronco
Bad boots! Bucking like a Bronco
Not behaving like they ought to!
My boots have got a mind of their own
they only behave when I’m at home
I’m dancing down at the watering hole
Like a wild pony, out of control
“Quit horsing around”, I whispered in prayer
Boots kept bucking, they don’t care
Bad boots! don’t you dare!
You better behave or I’ll get a new pair!
[chorus]
[female option] My arms started flailing, dress displaced all over the place
Bra is popping, my boobs hit my face
Bucking around and hitting my behind
Riding bad boots like a carnival ride
[male option] My arms started flailing, hat displaced
Gripping my junk as mud hit my face
Bucking around and hitting my behind
Riding bad boots like a carnival ride
[male option] My arms started flailing all over the place
I Gripped my junk as the ground hit my face
Bucking around and hitting my behind
Riding bad boots like a carnival ride
[male option] My arms started flailing all over the place
Gripping my junk as mud hit my face
Bucking around and hitting my behind
Riding bad boots like a carnival ride
[male option] Boots are scaring me, think I’m gonna break
Boots are scaring me, my bones are gonna break
Boots are scaring me, is my body gonna break?
I’m Gripping my junk as the ground hit my face
jumped up kicking and hitting my behind
Riding bad boots like a carnival ride
find, taste, mistake, break, Boots are scaring me, is my body gonna break?
Boots are jerking me all over the place
I’m clutching the air as the ground hit my face
jumping up kicking and hitting my behind
Riding bad boots like a carnival ride
[chorus]
I’m walking back towards the farm
boots start racing like they see the barn
things turned ugly when they rared
I should have found other shoes to wear
