[C]I was a toy, [F]shiny and [C]new
Before I was [G]broken by [C]you
You played with me and used me up
Until you thought you’d had enough
You forgot I was I’m sittin’ around on your shelf
Seems you’d rather play with yourself
Than to pick me up and remember when
you had your fun then told your friends
[chorus]
[F]Broke [C]toys, [F]broken by [C]you[G][A][C]
[F]Broke [C]toys, [G]what did you [C]do?
Broke toys, I used to be new
Broke toys, broken by you
You left scratches and some dents
now my toy parts are all bent
Tossed me aside and moved on
when I looked around you were goneno more fun for girls or boys
because you broke all the toys
[chorus]
Underneath all the dust
The shiny toy you used to lust
Next player I’m winning their heart
cuz I’m fixing my own broken parts
[chorus]
Song History
I wanted a heavy metal sound, I just can’t execute it. Nashville comments: start with verse, chords too dissonant, bass line is too busy. Rewrite.

Songwriting material, can this fit a folk indie band? Or is this a soloist topic?

Sheesh, you’d think I was demented and dark, but I promise it started out as a child’s toy talking to the child to come play with them, but the second the first line was written to the page it took on a bit of a different life, so I just went with it. Some days it’s easy and it pours out. Other times it might take days to get the story onto the page.
I hear heavy metal here, actually. The sentiment does fit heavy metal to make it more of a mad sounding toy. Put a folk tune behind it and it just becomes sad.
I’m a toy, shiny and new
Before I was broken by you
Without a scratch without a dent
Before my toy parts were all bent
[chorus]
Broke toys, broken by you
Broke toys, what did you do
Broke toys, used to be new
Broke toys, broken by you
You got ahold of me and used me up
Until you thought you’d had enough
Threw me aside and moved on
I might as well be gone
But I hang around sitting on a shelf
And watch you rather play with yourself
Than to pick me up and look again
At the fun we had back when it began way back when
[chorus]
Underneath all the dust
The shiny toy you used to lust
I’m fixing my own broken parts
Next player I will win their heart
[chorus]
09/08/24
[chorus]
Broke toys, broken by you
Broke toys, what did you do?
Broke toys, I used to be new
Broke toys, broke by you
I was a toy, shiny and new
Before I was broken by you
Without a scratch without a dent
Before my toy parts were all bent
You played with me and used me up
Until you thought you’d had enough
Tossed me aside and moved on
I might as well, well be gone
[chorus]
Sitting around on your shelf
Seems you’d rather play with yourself
Than to pick me up and look again
At all the fun we had back then
Underneath all the dust
The shiny toy you used to lust
fixing my own broken parts
Next player I’m winning their heart
[chorus]

Suggested that I add a bridge to break up the song a bit. Restructured the form with all verses in front of bridge and sandwich the bridge in-between 2 chorus because it was just to unsettling to come out of the bridge and back to a verse:
I’m a toy, shiny and new
Before I was broken by you
Without a scratch without a dent
Before my toy parts were all bent
You played with me and used me up
Until you thought you’d had enough
Tossed me aside and moved on
I might as well, well be gone
[chorus]
Broke toys, broken by you
Broke toys, what did you do?
Broke toys, I used to be new
Broke toys, broke by you
Sitting around on your shelf
Seems you’d rather play with yourself
Than to pick me up and look again
At all the fun we had back then
Underneath all the dust
The shiny toy you used to lust
I’m fixing my own broken parts
Next player I’m winning their heart
[chorus]
[Bridge]
(background vocals)
you broke all the toys
you broke all the toys
you broke all the toys
you broke all the toys
you tell me don’t make a noise
while you cover up with social poise
no more fun for girls and boys
because you broke all the toys
[chorus]
Bro-ken Toys, Bro-Ken-Toys
Bro-ken Toys, Bro-Ken-Toys
annoyed at your social poise
punched a broken nose
notice my open eyes
see who opponent is
11/3/24
Maybe I don’t want a bridge?
[chorus]
Broke toys, broken by you
Broke toys, what did you do?
Broke toys, I used to be new
Broke toys, broke by you
I’m a toy, shiny and new
Before I was broken by you
Without a scratch without a dent
Before my toy parts were all bent
You played with me and used me up
Until you thought you’d had enough
Tossed me aside and moved on
I might as well, well be gone
[chorus]
Sitting around on your shelf
Seems you’d rather play with yourself
Than to pick me up and look again
At all the fun we had back then
[bridge]
tell me don’t make a noise
you cover up with social poise
no more fun for girls and boys
because you broke all the toys
Underneath all the dust
The shiny toy you used to lust
I’m fixing my own broken parts
Next player I’m winning their heart
[chorus]
11/4/24 NSAI feedback
start with verse
Bass line is too busy
…and then you moved on
… I looked around and you were gone
…you had your fun and told your friends
…I’m sitting around
…I was a toy
…what did I do?
…remember again
..I’m broken by you(1st line), I’m a broke toy (last line chorus)
12/9/24

[chorus]
Underneath all the dust
The shiny toy you used to lust
Next player I’m winning their heart (<- go higher here?)
I’m fixing my own broken parts
[chorus]
12/12/24
Epiphany! For a song pitch, you only get the 1st verse and chorus played. So, arrange the 1st verse to be the most interesting. Here’s another rewrite.
[C]I was a toy, [F]shiny and new
Before I was [G]broken by [C]you
You played with me and used me up
Until you thought you’d had enough
I’m sitting around on your shelf
Seems you’d rather play with [G]yourself
Than to pick me up and remember when
you had your fun then told your friends
[chorus]
[C][F]Broke [C]toys, [F]broken by [C]you[G][A][C]
[G][F]Broke [C]toys, [D]what [C]did [A]I [G]do?
Broke toys, I used to be new
Broke toys, [G]broken by [C]you
I looked around and you were gone
You tossed me aside and moved on
no more fun for girls and boys
because you broke all the toys
[chorus]
Underneath all the dust
The shiny toy you used to lust
Next player I’m winning their heart
I’m fixing my own[G] broken parts
[chorus]
12/16/24
A few more lyric adjustments.
[C]I was a toy, [F]shiny and [C]new
Before I was [G]broken by [C]you
You played with me and used me up
Until you thought you’d had enough
You forgot I was on your shelf
Seems you’d rather play with yourself
Than to pick me up and remember when
you had your fun then told your friends
[chorus]
[F]Broke [C]toys, [F]broken by [C]you[G][A][C]
[F]Broke [C]toys, [G]what did you [C]do?
Broke toys, I used to be new
Broke toys, broken by you
You tossed me aside and moved on
when I looked around you were gone
no more fun for girls or boys
because you broke all the toys
[chorus]
Underneath all the dust
The shiny toy you used to lust
Next player I’m winning their heart
cuz I’m fixing my own broken parts
[chorus]
