My parents don’t know, ‘cuz I’m too clever.
I found the presents. They could should have hid them better.
I held each one wrapped in silver and gold
I picked at the paper, the gift became exposed
[chorus]
I tinkered with the wrappin’ to peek inside a package
then I sealed the edges like it didn’t even happen
I opened just one until one became two
next thing I knew I’d opened quite a few
Could not stop exploring, snooping was fun
Until Christmas morning became a re-run
Christmas morning, felt unrewarding
a fake smile that I was forcing
pretending not to know what’s inside
were the repercussions I had to hide
[chorus]
My adults parents don’t know I learned a lesson
don’t peek at presents it’s more fun guessing

Song History
NSAI notes: You still need a melody, not just 1 line 4 times. save tinkered with wrapping to end of chorus, and add more sneaky stuff to chorus. A fake smile is awkward partial sentence. Change My adults to parents. Maybe add “look a ‘new’ package” to bring story full circle.

Boy did I learn my lesson as a kid, the year I peeked at all my Christmas gifts. I successfully pulled off my . mission by carefully removing the tape from the wrapping paper, and then carefully put the tape back on to re-wrap the present after I discovered what was inside. I just couldn’t contain my excitement of getting presents and I let my curiosity get the better of me. I knew exactly every present I was getting by the time Christmas morning came. I didn’t think peeking was such a big deal until I realized that I had ruined the surprise of it. I didn’t value the surprise at all, until that year I ruined it. There was absolutely no surprise for me that Christmas, so on Christmas morning while unwrapping presents I had to pretend to be surprised. Yes, I did that successfully too, but it did get a little exhausting to keep up that type of facade. That itself was the real surprise, so I guess in fact I did get a surprise? A unique learning experience… I was surprised at the fact that I was disappointed at Christmas because there was no surprise. I didn’t think I was going to ruin Christmas for myself at all. It’s something that didn’t hit me until after Christmas morning, when I got no surprise at all. I was surprised that there was no surprise, which is kinda hard to understand. While ruining my surprise, I wasn’t thinking about ruining the surprise. I just didn’t know, and I just didn’t value the surprise. Immediately after Christmas morning present opening, then I knew the disappointment of not having a surprise.
Surprise, surprise, don’t ruin the surprise
I thought the gift was the gift. But it’s not, it’s the thought. Stupid kid unwrapping packages didn’t know that until Christmas morning. Tough lesson.
I thought the gift was the gift
as all children might think
link, sink, wink
Christmas morning chaos
waiting all year for this day
to open presents
a good time to play
To anxious to wait
for Christmas day
they don’t know
I peeked yesterday
The excitement is gone
but I have to pretend
so no one knows
what I did
I got away with it with the adult figures/parent/ in my life, but I didn’t really get away with anything because it stole the surprise. They don’t know what I did, but Santa knows of course. I thought it was innocent enough, that I wasn’t hurting anyone, but a real tough life lesson happened when I stole the surprise of it. I just didn’t know until it was too late, then there’s no going back. Just because I wrapped the presents back exactly as they were, I was unable to un-know what was in them. I was filled with terrible regret that Christmas.
The Christmas burglar didn’t steal the presents, it was me stealing the surprise of it. But worst of all is that I had to bear this lesson all on my own without anyone else knowing. Robber, burglar, shoplift, pickpocket, BANDIT, hijacker, prowler
Christmas bandit
stole my surprise
Christmas bandit
is me in disguise
I made my own crime
eyes, lies, disguise, denies, spies, unwise, cries, advise, dies, sometimes, besides, provides, lives, times, signs, crimes,
arrive, smiles,
My adults don’t know
I learned a big lesson
don’t peek at presents
it’s more fun guessing

the chorus is just so boring no matter what I do to it, then it dawned on me to take the most interesting part of the song and make that the chorus. Duh.

11/21/24 – still so boring, so I recorded vocals with a pitch shift to sound like a little kid singing, but it’s a little like the chipmunks, but it’s still more interesting than the original.
SELF FEEDBACK of first recording:
- ADD a second verse giving more detail of how finding the presents was not an accident and I was a bad girl.
- “The excitement is gone” sounds way to happy, re-record to sound sad somber and regretful
- “I learned a lesson” the spoken word ‘learned’ is too long. Record again changing the emphasis to I and lesson.
It was not an accident, I went looking for the presents and when I found them, I carefully opened the wrapping just enough to see what was inside. Then I expertly re-taped them to not look tampered with. My execution was perfect! I was a bad girl, and that put my on the naughty list for sure.
It was not accident, and I am so bad
The Christmas wrapping was tampered with
to see what was inside
When I found the presents
I tampered with the wrappin’
I saw what’s inside
wrapped ’em back like it didn’t happen
To see inside the packages
I tampered with the wrapping
then sealed back the edges
Like it didn’t even happen
tampered= tinkered is more child like language
11/29/24
blah blah still boring and predictable? I don’t think the first verse foreshadows anything and does not advance the story. The title is very boring and straightforward. Maybe change it to include the words sneaky and bad, like Sneaky Bad or Sneaky Bad Christmas? and change chorus to reflect the sneaky bad nature of the song? The remorse comes in at the end of the song, but I think the majority of sneaky bad should be a party. Maybe tinker with the wrapping like it didn’t even happen becomes the chorus?
Second Angle is to present it from the Adult point of view, viewing Christmas through the eyes of their own child? Suspecting the child has done the same thing? but you don’t call them out on it because of knowing their remorse that will occur?
Peeked Inside A Package
Christmas morning! Been waiting for this day

But, I did not wait for Christmas day
I found the presents And peeked yesterday

I tinkered with the wrappin’ peeked inside a package

Ain’t hurtin’ no one, peeking’s so much fun
Until Christmas morning became a re-run

[Bridge]
Every box with my name wore a fake smile
Each response was thank you, dropped it in the opened pile

so no one will ever Know what I did

But, I did not wait for Christmas day
I found the presents And peeked yesterday
still doesn’t advance the story of how bad I was in the first line of the first verse, a great opportunity here.
